Dear Parents and Student/Athletes:
This publication is presented to you because your son or daughter has indicated a desire to participate in interscholastic athletics and you have expressed your willingness to permit him/her to compete. Your interest in this phase of our school program is gratifying. We believe that participation in sports provides a wealth of opportunities and experiences which are designed to enhance each student’s physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development.
The material in this athletic handbook is intended to inform parents and students about the procedures which govern interscholastic athletics in the Blind Brook-Rye Union Free School District. The athletic department recognizes that these procedures need a broad base of community understanding and support to be most effective.
There are many different views as to the role of athletics in schools. Blind Brook’s athletic tradition has been to make every attempt to compete with honor and dignity. These attributes are developed by practicing and playing to the best of one’s ability, displaying good sportsmanship, and respecting the rights of others be they teammates, opposing team members, coaches, officials, or staff personnel. While we always strive to win, the purpose of our athletic program is to help our athletes become better people, and better athletes – win or lose.
Our philosophy is that while the Athletic Department takes great pride in winning, it does not condone “winning at any cost”. It discourages any and all pressures which might tend to neglect good sportsmanship and good mental health. At all times, the athletic program will be conducted in such a way as to justify it as a positive educational experience.
Sincerely,
James Spano
Athletic Director
