philosophy of Competition in interscholastic athletics

Intramurals

Unlike the interscholastic program, the purpose of the intramural program is to give students an opportunity to participate in a variety of athletic activities.

  • All students are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
  • All students are guaranteed playing time.
  • There are no minimum requirements in terms of skill development
  • There is no try-out phase.
  • Competition is “in-house”; we do not compete against other schools.  Therefore, we can create the rules and regulations that best reflect our philosophy regarding athletics and physical education.
  • One or two adults will oversee the programs.  There are usually no individual coaches for the teams.

Recreation

  • Recreation programs are conducted independently of the school districts program.
  • We have instituted monthly meetings with The Rye Brook Recreation Department in order that we keep communication open regarding use of facilities and to ensure we are providing what is necessary for our students.
  • The school district does not dictate the Recreation Department’s philosophy on what sports are offered, playing time issues, etc.
