practice and game procedures

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Section I sets start dates for team practices.  New York State Law requires a minimum number of individual and team practices prior to entering into competition with another school.  Student athletes are required to attend ALL tryout/practice sessions.  If a student is unable to attend, he/she will not start in the next scheduled game.

When your son/daughter accepts a position on a team, he/she is making the commitment to attend all practice sessions and games and to invest energy toward the development of skill and team building goals.

A student who has been disciplined by the coach must attend the game. League, Section, and State rules will be followed at all times.  If a student is ejected from a game by an official, that student must sit out the next game.  If a student is ejected for a second time, the minimum response will be suspension for three games.

For the fall sports season the Varsity and JV teams begin prior to the start of school (usually the 3rd week in August).  Also, Varsity and JV teams will hold basketball practice during Thanksgiving break.  Varsity teams will hold practices during Christmas, Winter and Spring vacations.

Practice Schedules

Athletes will be given or told the practice schedule for the sport they are participating.  These schedules should be distributed well in advance of all practices and changed only as a last resort.  Changes in the practice and game schedules will be posted outside the Athletic Director’s office and communicated via the Athletic Hot Line X3851.

Transportation

Students may not drive to an away contest or practice.  Parents may transport their own child, but should obtain prior approval from the Athletic Director.

Students can always leave with their parent.  Students traveling with another parent must have a signed travel release form from their parent.

Religious Obligations- Every effort will be made by the coach and athletic department to avoid conflicts with the religious obligations of the student athlete.  The student athlete must notify coaches well in advance of potential conflicts.  Coaches will continue to be sensitive to these special circumstances.

Conflict With Other School Activities

An individual student who attempts to participate in several extracurricular activities may encounter a conflict of obligations.  The athletic department recognizes that each student should have the opportunity for a broad range of experiences.    Attempts to schedule events will be made to minimize conflicts.  Students have a responsibility to do everything they can do to avoid conflicts.  This includes being cautious about belonging to too many activities where conflicts are bound to happen.  It also means notifying the faculty sponsors/coaches involved immediately when a conflict does arise.

The Athletic Director, club or activity advisor, and coaches will attempt to work out a solution with the student.  If a decision cannot be agreed upon, the Principal will make a decision based on the relative importance of each event to the individual, the team, and the school. Once a decision has been made, and the student abides by the decision, he/she will not be penalized.  If it becomes obvious that a student cannot fulfill the obligation of both activities, he/she should withdraw from the sport or activity.

Playing Time

JV and Varsity

At this level, playing time must be earned.  This can happen through effort and involvement in pre-season programs and demonstration of skill during the season.  An important point to remember is that the less time an individual spends on skill development (practice and hard work) usually translates into less playing time.

On the JV and Varsity level, the emphasis shifts more towards winning the interscholastic contest, as will be the case with each of the schools we compete against.  Although this does not mean winning at all costs, it does mean that we will compete at the highest level with the best team we can field against our opponents.

Modified

Once a student makes the team at this level they should be confident that they will receive playing time.  This does not mean all participants will receive equal playing time.  The goal at this level will be to keep the number of students who make the team at a manageable number.  This will allow the coach to conduct practices that are productive and allow students the opportunity to receive experience in game situations.  If a player wants to receive more playing time, they should do all they can in the off season to improve their skills.

It is up to the sole discretion of the coach at all levels to determine who plays and for how long.
