Selection/Classification

Blind Brook allows the Selection Classification procedure to be used for students in the 7th and 8th grade.  This process allows students to participate on JV and Varsity teams.  However, as per our moving up policy, this process is designed for the exceptional athlete.  The athlete must project to be a starter or to receive significant playing time on the team they are trying out for.  They must be recommended to the Athletic Director by the JV/Varsity coach and pass the Selective Classification Fitness Test.

Moving Up Policy

7th Graders – Must play in the middle school program unless there is no program available, in which case students may only play as high as the JV level.  Coaches may petition the Athletic Director for a player to move up to a 9th grade or JV team.

8th Graders  - Must play at the middle school level unless a JV coach petitions the Athletic Director for the student to play at the JV level.

9th Graders – The average 9th grader should participate on the JV level.  Varsity coaches may petition the Athletic Director for the student to play at the Varsity level.

10th Graders – May play on varsity teams, however, most should still be playing on the JV level.  A 10th grader needs to project to receive significant playing time on the team.

Due to the increased student enrollment, it has been necessary to implement a cut policy on all levels and in most sports.  Students need to be prepared to compete in order to make the team.  This can be accomplished by getting involved in off-season programs to improve one’s skills as an athlete, or through formal programs (camps, etc.), or simply by playing the sport with friends to practice those skills.  Don’t wait until the first day of practice to get into shape or to start working on your skills.   In other words, shoot some baskets, do some running, have a catch, hit tennis balls, etc. before try-outs begin.  The less you leave to chance, the less you rely on “luck” in the competitive team selection process.  The Blind Brook Athletic policy is to have a 3-5 day try-out period.
