Spring Sports Updates

JV Baseball

The JV baseball team is looking to follow up their strong season last year with continued success. The team is led by coach Brett Lyons and features a number of returning players. Sophmore pitcher and center fielder Daniel Fishman and sophmore shortstop Ben Broch are considered to be the leaders of the team.

Sophmore second baseman Mike Shaw has high expectations for the team. He says, “We have sophmore leadership and great coaching, which will hopefully help some of the younger players on the team in their first season of JV ball and lead us to another winning season.”

Two 8th graders, Scott Wurtzel and Matan Newman, have also made their way onto the lineup. The team will start the season on April 14th.

Track Team

The Blind Brook Track team is getting ready to begin the 2010 season. The team is coming off a season in which three members made it to the state-qualifying meet.

Victoria Denti, who was one of the state-qualifiers, is optimistic about the upcoming season. “We had a really good season last year after a lot of hard work, and this year our goal is to do the same,” said Denti.

The other runners on the team to reach the state-qualifying meet last year were Robbie Winston and Jason Kulik. However, Kulik was lost to graduation.

The team is well prepared behind coaches Ryan Collins and Matthew Beatty Freshman Jake Starr says, “I feel it is going to be a very good season because everyone on the team is very willing to work hard and cooperate with the coaches to bring out the best in themselves.”

The team has not yet decided captains, but there is a large team this year and plenty of experienced members qualified to lead the team. With new opponents who are closer by, Blind Brook will be competing against bigger schools, which will create a challenge.

JV and Varsity Tennis

The 2010 boys’ JV and Varsity Tennis teams are looking to build on their 2009 success. Junior Eric Halpern, who brought the Trojans to an undefeated 2009 season, leads the Varsity team and plays first singles.

Senior Alex Visoky said, “We have a very good team with a lot of young talent, but our schedule is extremely tough. Overall, I think we’ll do well.”

The JV Tennis team had an undefeated season last year as well, and is looking to get even better while facing much harder teams from bigger schools.

The Trojans will be playing a much tougher schedule than last year because of the budget cuts, which prevent them from traveling far to face their normal competition. No matches have been played to date, but the season is right around the corner and the teams are excited. The Varsity team’s first match was on Tuesday, April 6 versus Briarcliff at Blind Brook High School.

Varsity Softball

The 2010 varsity softball season will certainly be a challenge, but the players and coaches remain hopeful. The team, led by captains Katie Ehrman and Jennifer Jond, is comprised of two seventh graders, one ninth grader, four sophomores, five juniors, and three seniors – many of whom are new to the sport.

In order to prepare their new team for the upcoming season, Coach Allan Striar and Assistant Coach Christine Keegan have been working with the girls six days a week since the middle of March. On Saturday mornings, the girls go to “Pro-Swing” in Port Chester to improve their batting and overall skills.

Striar commented, “The team is young, but we are seeing definite improvement. The thing I like best is that all the girls come every day and they want to improve.” The team has already had three scrimmages and played their first game against Byram Hills on April 7th.

Varsity Golf

The Varsity Golf team started their season off with a victory after defeating Bronxville by a total of 13 strokes. This score comes from the total of the five best scores that the six designated starters on each team finished with.

Coach Marcello Marcoccia looks towards juniors Bryan Silverman and Michael Epstein to be the team’s high performers this year. Silverman performed particularly well in the Bronxville match.

“Bryan Silverman just picked up where he left off last year. Of the 6 people who made the [secondary sectionals] tournament last year, he was the top,” says Marcoccia.

The team did lose a lot of talent to graduation. Marcoccia estimated that about 50% of last year’s strongest players did not return. Although no one from last year’s team made the cutoff to qualify for sectionals (which is done on an individual basis), six students made it to a secondary sectionals tournament.
