Middle schools are often identified as a transition between the nurturing nest that is elementary school and the academic rigors of high school. However, it would be simplistic and inaccurate to define middle schools as simply a place between the familiar “here” and the unknown “there.” They are much more than that and need to combine both the warmth and personalization of the lower grades and the intellectual challenge that should develop with every step toward high school and beyond. Striking the right chord of developmental responsiveness and high expectations for student achievement is intrinsic to excellent middle schools which provide such important social, emotional and intellectual learning to students during the delicate and complex years of early adolescence.
Here at Blind Brook Middle School, everything is in place to provide just that balance for our students as they navigate the unique challenges of grades 6, 7 and 8. A caring community of teachers and staff members is first and foremost in making students feel safe and supported here in school. From our distinguished teachers to our skilled and caring support staff, BBMS students are surrounded by people who are committed to their success and well being on a daily basis. A framework of high expectations and a district focus on excellence in instruction and program ensures that each and every student will have a middle school experience which promotes their best possible development both academically and socially.
While the greatest challenges to middle schoolers can come down to opening lockers or choosing a seat at the lunch table, the greatest challenge to parents of middle schoolers is sometimes just being able to let go enough to allow students to succeed (and occasionally stumble) on their own while still keeping that safety net of support in view. Building independence and fostering resilience and the ability to deal with the challenges of increasing responsibility is optimal when school and home work together as partners during the three exciting years that are middle school. Good communication is the key to that partnership. All of us here at Blind Brook Middle School are here for you and your child. Please do not hesitate to let us know how we are doing and how we can help make this new school year a great one for your middle school student.
