Winter athletics Signing Day has seniors looking forward
A festive atmosphere prevailed in the library on January 30th, where four young men sat anxiously at a table decorated in balloons and brightly colored banners. They were the star of the show on this day as family, friends and teammates gathered to celebrate. As part of an athletic signing ceremony, the four signed their letters of intent to their respective colleges, where they will continue to play their favorite sport.
Michael Berman Annunzita was the first to sign his letter amongst applause from the crowd. He will be attending Clark University where he will play lacrosse.
“I preferred the mix of academics and sports,” Michael said of his choice.
He said amongst his fondest memories of playing at Blind Brook High School was the fact that lacrosse was not one of the major sports and he had an opportunity to watch the program grow over the years.
Emcee Athletic Director Kim Saxton shared that Michael began playing lacrosse when he was four years old and has made a name for himself in the sport.
“He has been Blind Brook offensive player of the year, all-league recipient, achieved 100 assists, and also was named captain of the first ever league title lacrosse team,” Ms. Saxton said.
Senior Will Jaffee made his mark on the track. He is ranked in the top 25 in Westchester County in the 55 Meter dash. Among his other achievements include winning the 1000M race at last year's Section 1 Class C Championships, anchoring Blind Brook's 4X1 and 4X4 teams that medaled at the 2023 Loucks Games in a school record time and competed at Nike Nationals in Eugene, OR. Will also holds the official indoor track school records in the 55M, 300M, 600M and 1,000M. He’s earned 10 varsity letters in Cross-Country and Track and two JV letters in basketball and he found time to play for Rye Brook Travel Soccer, Triple Threat's AAU tournament basketball teams and Rye Brook Rebels baseball.
In the fall he will be attending SUNY Geneseo, where not surprisingly, he will join the track and field team.
“They had a really welcoming atmosphere,” Will said of his chosen college. “It’s a mix of sport and athletics, but I really felt welcomed there.”
Will said his fondest memory while an athlete at BBHS was participating in the Nike Nationals. It was the school’s first time competing in the event and getting there was an adventure.
Seth Low became a part of the BBHS lacrosse team at the recommendation of a friend. His friend must have seen his talent, for throughout his high school career Seth took to the sport like a natural. He earned the title of BBHS Defender of the Year twice, All-League, and contributing to Blind Brook’s first-ever league championships victory last year. During the summers, he joined the Westchester Warriors club team and attended countless showcases, even earning the Primetime Colonial Clash All Showcase Team.
It came as no surprise when Seth decided to play lacrosse at Muhlenberg College.
“During a campus visit I met with the guys, and I liked the team culture,” Seth said of his choice. “It’s something I wanted to be a part of.”
He said he will always remember attending his first lacrosse game as a freshman and he said seeing how much fun the team was having inspired him to want to play the sport too.
Andrew Rogovic shared his athletic talents with the BBHS Baseball team, and he hopes to do the same as part of the team at Northeastern University.
“It was someplace I felt I could develop in both baseball and personally,” Andrew said of his college choice.
During his career at BBHS he was named 2023 All League, All Section, League and Section Pitcher of Year, LoHud 1st Team All Star and he led all of Section 1 in Strikeouts in 2023 with 115 on the year, which is also a Blind Brook single season record and he was ranked in the top 500 players in the country by Perfect Game.
“The entire season last year,” Andrew said of what his favorite memory was. “It was a great group of guys.”
Ms. Saxton ended the ceremony wishing the student athletes all the best in their future endeavors.
“You are now among the empowered men and women to go on to college and play in the sport that you love,” she said. “We congratulate you all and wish for nothing but success in all you do.”
