Community Update - 2025-1031

Dear Blind Brook Community,

Happy Halloween! It has been an inspiring and productive time period in our schools, filled with moments that reflect both our district’s commitment to excellence and the joyful spirit of learning that defines Blind Brook. From deep learning conversations to student voice, creative teaching, and strong community engagement, there is much to celebrate. Be sure to check out our website for some amazing pictures of the iconic BMPRSS Halloween Parade and our Seniors!

Teaching & Learning

Our recent Superintendent’s Conference Day provided valuable time for professional reflection and collaboration. Teachers explored the concept of deep learning, or how students develop enduring understanding by connecting ideas, thinking critically, and applying skills in new contexts. The elementary team shared creative ideas for making this work developmentally appropriate, which perfectly captures our district’s spirit of innovation.

This week we convened the first meeting of the new Curriculum Advisory Council, bringing together teachers, administrators, and parents to review our curriculum review process and provide feedback on how best to ensure our programs align with our district goals and Vision of a Learner.

We also continue to refine our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to better meet the needs of all learners. This year’s focus includes deepening staff understanding of MTSS practices and expanding the data tools used to monitor progress and guide interventions for both neurotypical and neurodivergent learners.

Building Excellence & Operations

As part of my entry plan, I’ve had the opportunity to conduct extended building walk-throughs with our leadership team. Each building tells its own story about how space influences learning, and about the care our facilities staff takes in maintaining and improving them. It’s clear that our district has made meaningful infrastructure upgrades in recent years, and those investments are paying dividends in safety, modern learning, and pride of place.

We are also entering the early stages of budget season, working collaboratively with administrators to ensure that every dollar reflects our shared priorities: academic growth, student wellness, and vibrant extracurricular opportunities that are all balanced in a fiscally responsible manner.

On the facilities front, the capital projects approved last fall are in various stages of completion. Next up are HVAC installation, drainage improvements, gym divider removal/replacement, and press box installation. We are also pleased to report that NYSED has approved project three plans (for summer of 2026) almost two months ahead of schedule.

Community & Culture

Our schools continue to shine as places of connection and creativity. At Ridge Street School, we were honored to host visitors from Byram Hills, who came to observe our FLES program. They left deeply impressed by the quality of instruction and the enthusiasm of our students.

At Blind Brook Middle School, more than 50 students participated in the annual Pumpkin Carving Party—an event made possible by our incredible PTA.

At Blind Brook High School, College Admissions Night is scheduled for November 19th, featuring representatives from Binghamton, Delaware, Penn State, and the University of Rochester. Meanwhile, our counseling department continues to support students as they explore post-secondary plans, and our teachers are exploring ways to further enhance student choice and voice in the curriculum.

Principals also continue to host monthly open conversations with parents, fostering meaningful dialogue and partnership. We would love to have you join us next month!

Our newly re-established Health & Safety Committee held its first meeting last week, reflecting our commitment to collaboration and proactive continuous improvement. We will expand the group in the spring to include community and first responder representatives as we update our district-wide safety plan.

I also had the pleasure of hosting several small student focus groups that are ongoing. The student insights were outstanding. They spoke about how to make school experiences even more engaging, including ideas for new activities and technology use.

Athletics

It’s playoff season for the Trojans! Please come out to support our teams as they compete in sectional play:

  • Girls Varsity Volleyball – Saturday, Nov. 1, at Home vs. Westlake/Edgemont winner at 12:30 p.m.
  • Girls Varsity Soccer Sectional Championship – Saturday, Nov. 1, at Nyack High School vs. Briarcliff at 2:30 p.m.
  • Cheerleading Sectionals – Sunday, Nov. 2, at Arlington High School at 11:30 a.m.

We are so proud of our student-athletes for their hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Let’s pack the stands and cheer them on!

In closing, Blind Brook continues to grow stronger through the collective efforts of our teachers, students, staff, and families. Whether through classroom innovation, capital improvements, or spirited community events, every week brings evidence of a district that is learning, leading, and thriving together.

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. See you around campus!

Warm Regards,

Brian J. Alm

School Board Recognition - October 2025

This is a time to promote awareness and understanding of the important work performed by local school boards. Public schools form the bedrock of our communities and our country. Democracy thrives with educated citizens capable of critical thinking and civil discourse. And it is our local school boards who are ultimately responsible for student success.

It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these volunteers devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child learn; they make the tough decisions and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of leadership our community expects.

School board members give the Blind Brook community a voice in education decision-making. Even though we make a special effort to show our appreciation in October, their contribution is a year-round commitment.

The members serving our district are as follows:

Jeffrey Mensch, President

Correy Stephenson, Vice President

Danny Fung, Member

Katherine Hallissy Ayala, Member

Samantha Smith, Member

Please give special recognition to our new Student Ex-Officio Board Members:

Simon Riley, Senior

Iris Chen, Junior
