Board of Education Candidate Petitions
Dear Candidate,
Enclosed is the Nominating Petition for the office of Trustee of the Board of Education of the Blind Brook-Rye Union Free School District. Petitions require 25 signatures or 2% of the number of voters who voted in the previous annual election, whichever is greater. There were 1,134 votes cast in the 2022 Budget Vote & Board Member Election; therefore, the 2023 petition must have a minimum of 25 qualified voters’ signatures. The petition must be returned 30 days before the election, by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2023.
The qualifications for membership on a school board are:
-
Must be able to read and write.
-
Must be a qualified voter of the district (citizen of the U.S., at least 18 years of age and not adjudged an incompetent. A convicted felon is barred from running for a seat on a school board if his or her maximum prison sentence has not expired or if he or she has not been pardoned or discharged from parole).
-
Must be and have been a resident of the district for a continuous and uninterrupted period of at least one year immediately before the election.
-
May not have been removed from any school district office within the preceding one year.
-
May not reside with another member of the same school board as a member of the same family.
-
May not be a current employee of the school board.
-
May not simultaneously hold another incompatible public office.
On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 10:00 am, there will be a lottery for placement on the ballot. In the event any candidate is not present in person or is not represented by a person designated in a written proxy the District Clerk is authorized to act as proxy and candidate will be notified of the results.
