interim business official laurie baumThe Board of Education has appointed interim business official Laurie Baum to the key district role of Assistant Superintendent of Facilities and Finance. Her appointment was made June 7 and is effective July 1.

Ms. Baum joined the district in her interim role on Jan. 5 after a committee of community members, administrators, parents, and business office employees recommended her to the Board of Education. She brings more than 20 years of experience, most recently in the Long Island school districts of Sag Harbor and Bethpage. She has managed a variety of functions, including budgeting, personnel, facilities management, construction, food service and transportation. In interviews she demonstrated extensive knowledge of financial and facilities management.

“It is a tremendous benefit to our district to have a professional with Ms. Baum’s experience and credentials in this crucial role overseeing both our budgetary operations as well as our facilities. Her partnership these last five months has demonstrated her value and commitment to the district as we continue to grow and excel,” Interim Superintendent, Dr. Colin Byrne, said.

Ms. Baum expressed gratitude for the support of the Board of Education and Administration and said she is eager to continue the work she began this year. Among her immediate goals are to streamline district purchasing processes to increase efficiency and ease of use and to see construction at Bruno M. Ponterio Ridge Street School successfully completed this summer.

“I would like to thank Dr. Byrne and members of the Board of Education for the confidence they have shown in me. Blind Brook is a wonderful school community that is committed to excellence and to student achievement. It is a privilege to have a part in supporting and ensuring we meet those commitments in everything we do,” Ms. Baum said.

Ms. Baum’s appointment is the latest step in the district’s efforts to build a strong administrative leadership team. Dr. Michael Curtin was also appointed last week as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Kimberly Saxton was named in May as Director of Health, Nursing, Physical Education & Interscholastic Athletics. In April, Dr. Byrne, who has held his interim role since October, was appointed Superintendent, effective July 1.
